The Whole School Laughed When I Wore a Dress to Prom With My Boyfriend Then the Principal Called Us Onto the Stage

The dress wasn’t a dare. It wasn’t a costume. It wasn’t a statement for TikTok.

I bought it because, for once in my life, I wanted to walk into a room without dressing for everybody else’s comfort.

I looked at myself in the mirror. Really looked.

“I chose this,” I said.

“There he is,” Jada said. She grabbed her fries and her purse. “Now let me run home and get dressed. I’ll see you at prom. Don’t you dare change.”

She kissed my cheek and ran down the stairs.

I heard her say “Hi, Noah, he looks amazing, bye, Noah,” all in one breath at the front door. Then the screen door banged.

Then it was quiet.

I stood at the top of the stairs for a long minute.

My mom was in the kitchen. I could hear her. She’d been very quiet all evening. When I came out of my room in the dress an hour ago, she’d been folding towels in the hallway. She’d stopped, with a towel in her hands, and looked at me for a long time.

She didn’t say anything bad. She didn’t say anything at all.

Then she’d said, “Let me get my camera,” and gone downstairs.

She hadn’t come back up with the camera.

I wasn’t sure what that meant. I didn’t have time to figure it out.

I walked down the stairs. Holding the skirt up so I wouldn’t trip.

When I opened the front door, Noah was standing on the porch in a black tux. He was holding a little plastic box with a green corsage inside. He must have asked Jada what color.

He froze.

He froze so completely that my stomach dropped right into my shoes.

“Okay,” I said quickly. “Use your words, Noah. I have my suit upstairs. It’s fine. I’ll change. It’ll take two minutes.”

He blinked.

“Damien,” he said. “You look incredible.”

I looked away. Fast. Before my eyes could give me away.

Noah stepped inside the front hall.

“Can I?” he asked, holding up the corsage.

I nodded.
