I Lost My Job After Stopping to Help a Sick Woman on the Road Then She Came Looking for Me

But Marcus was gone.

His phone was off. His Range Rover was found that evening in long-term parking at Westchester County Airport, unlocked, with the keys on the seat. But no flight records. No private jet manifest.

Claire stood at the conference room window, shaking.

“I married him.”

Eleanor put her arms around her. “You didn’t know.”

“I slept next to him every night.”

“You didn’t know, sweetheart.”

“I gave him everything. I co-signed his loans, Grandma. My name is on some of them.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“So did I, Claire. So did I.”

Later that night, as the investigators were packing up, Claire came over to me in the hallway. She looked completely exhausted.

“Christopher.”

“Yeah?”

She gave a broken little laugh. “Technically… you’re family. My husband is your uncle. Sort of. Half.”

Neither of us knew what to say to that.

Then my phone buzzed.

A text. Unknown number.

I opened it.

YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT DRIVING.

Underneath it, a photograph.

My house. My little gray three-bedroom house on Linwood Street. Taken from across the street.

And through the big front window, lit up by the living room lamp, clearly visible on the couch…

My two daughters.
