Afterward, my daughters and I walked Eleanor out to her car.
Before she got in, Lucy stopped her.
“Mrs. Halston?”
“Yes, dear?”
“Do you ever wonder what would have happened if Dad hadn’t stopped that day?”
Eleanor looked at me. Then back at Lucy.
“All the time.”
“What do you think would have happened?”
Eleanor smiled.
“I think your father would still have become exactly who he was meant to become. It just might have taken a little longer.”
“That’s generous,” I said.
“No.” She reached out and touched my arm. “The road didn’t make you who you are, Christopher.” She opened her car door. “It just revealed you.”
And then she was gone.
I stood on the sidewalk with Sophie and Lucy under the city lights.
My phone buzzed. An email from our newest investment. A tiny, employee-owned furniture company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Thirty-four workers.
The subject line said:
THANK YOU FOR BELIEVING WE MATTER.
I read it twice.
Sophie hooked her arm through mine. “You okay?”
“Yeah.”
Lucy narrowed her eyes at me. “You’re doing the emotional dad thing again.”
“I’m allowed.”
“You’re really not.”
We started walking toward the parking garage.
Halfway there, it started to rain. Cold October rain. People ran past us with jackets pulled over their heads.
We got to the corner.
And that’s when I saw him.
An old man, maybe eighty, standing next to a beat-up Buick with its hood up. Soaked to the skin. Staring at the engine like it had personally betrayed him.
Cars drove around him. People hurried past on the sidewalk. Nobody even slowed down.
Sophie saw him at the same moment I did.
She looked at me. I looked at her.
Neither of us said a word.
Then she smiled. And she stepped off the curb and walked across the street toward him.
Lucy groaned. “Oh, come on. We’re going to be here forever.”
But she followed her sister.
So did I.
