I Lost My Job After Stopping to Help a Sick Woman on the Road Then She Came Looking for Me

She slid one more sheet of paper across the table. An offer letter.

Base salary. An equity stake in the new fund. A seat on its investment committee. A hiring budget.

I stared at the final number at the bottom of the page.

“This can’t be right.”

“It is.”

“This is more money than I ever imagined making in my life.”

“I’m aware.”

I closed the folder. “Why me, Eleanor? Really.”

Her face went serious.

“Because when my life had no value to you except that I was a human being, you treated it as valuable anyway.” Her eyes were shining. “I’ve spent forty years hiring people who can read a balance sheet. I want one person at the table who remembers there are human beings behind the numbers.”

I couldn’t speak.

“And there’s one condition,” she added.

“What?”

“You don’t invest a single dollar in any company until you’ve sat down with at least one ordinary employee. Not the CEO. The person who sweeps the floor. The person who answers the phone.”

I smiled. “That I can do.”

“So?”

I looked at the contract. I thought about Gavin. About my daughters. About Route 18. About every single car that drove past Eleanor before mine.

I picked up the pen.

But before I could sign, Eleanor put her hand flat on the paper.

“One more thing.”

She reached into her handbag and took out an old envelope. She set it down on the desk in front of me.

It was yellowed at the corners. Sealed. Never opened.

My name was written across the front in faded blue ink.

Not Christopher Bennett.

Christopher Vale.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?”

Eleanor’s voice went very soft.

“Your father gave it to me. Thirty years ago.”
