My Millionaire Husband Bought His Mistress a $12 Million Penthouse While I Gave Birth to Our Twins Then He Came Home to Two Empty Cribs

At 6:03 on a Thursday morning, I walked through the front door of my house in Greenwich, Connecticut, carrying an overnight bag, a little velvet jewelry box, and the foolish belief that my wife would forgive me if I just found the right words.

And something beautiful enough to hand her.

The house was quiet.

So quiet I could hear the grandfather clock ticking at the bottom of the stairs.

Something about that silence made me stop in the front hall before I even took off my coat.

My wife, Margaret, was supposed to be home. With our newborn twins.

“Margaret?”

I called her name as I climbed the stairs. I was expecting an angry answer from our bedroom. Or the sound of her slippers moving down the hall toward the nursery.

Nothing.

The upstairs hallway was completely still.

I opened the door to the nursery. The room we’d spent months getting ready.

Both cribs were gone.

The walls were the same pale blue and soft ivory. The little watercolor paintings of ducks and sailboats that Margaret picked out were still hanging on the wall.

But underneath them, there was nothing. The cribs. The rocking chair. The baskets of tiny folded clothes. The changing table. The stack of soft blankets her mother knitted.

All of it. Gone.

On top of the white dresser sat two things.

A tablet. Propped up against the wall.

And two tiny plastic hospital bracelets.

I picked them up.

One said MERCER, BABY BOY. Benjamin. Born 3:14 a.m.

The other said MERCER, BABY GIRL. Abigail. Born 3:16 a.m.

Three days ago.

I had never held either one of them.

And standing there in that empty room, holding those two little bracelets in my palm, I started to understand that my wife hadn’t left me an argument.

She’d left me something much harder to face.

The truth.
