My Millionaire Husband Bought His Mistress a $12 Million Penthouse While I Gave Birth to Our Twins Then He Came Home to Two Empty Cribs

The twins are three years old now.

Benjamin is serious and careful. He lines up his toy cars in perfect rows and gets upset if anybody moves them. He’s me, Margaret says. Minus the private jet.

Abigail is loud and fearless and climbs everything. She has Margaret’s laugh and her left hand is still always by her face when she sleeps.

I have them every Wednesday night and every other weekend. In my little rental in Old Greenwich. It has two bedrooms. One for me. One for them. Bunk beds. A rug shaped like a pond with plastic frogs on it.

I sold the jet last year.

I didn’t need it anymore. I don’t fly to many places now that don’t have a playground nearby.

My company is smaller too. I sold off two divisions. I work four days a week. On Fridays, I take the twins to the library for story time. I’m the only dad in the room. The librarians know me by name.

Margaret and I aren’t married. We’re not friends exactly. We’re something I don’t have a word for.

Two people who once loved each other. Who are raising two kids together. Carefully. Honestly. Without pretending.

She calls me when Abigail has a fever. I call her when Benjamin says something funny. We sit together at the pediatrician’s office. We split the Christmas morning.

Last month, she started seeing someone. A high school history teacher in Darien named Paul. He’s kind. He’s patient. He’s good with the twins.

When she told me, I said I was glad.

And I meant it.

Because Margaret deserves someone who picks up the phone on the first ring.

I wasn’t that man when it mattered.

But I’m trying to be that man now. For two people who don’t remember a single thing about the night I didn’t come.
