My Millionaire Husband Bought His Mistress a $12 Million Penthouse While I Gave Birth to Our Twins Then He Came Home to Two Empty Cribs

For the next eight months, I showed up.

Every Tuesday and Saturday visit. Never late. Not once.

I rescheduled board meetings. I moved a closing in Boston. I flew back from a conference in Chicago on a red-eye so I’d make a Saturday morning visit at nine. I turned down a deal in Miami because the only date the sellers would meet was the twins’ six-month checkup.

Margaret didn’t ask me to be at that checkup. Rebecca just mentioned it was happening.

I asked if I could come.

Margaret said yes. Through Rebecca.

That was the first time I saw her since the morning I left for Florida.

She was sitting in the waiting room at the pediatrician’s office with both babies in a double stroller. She looked tired. And beautiful. And completely, peacefully separate from me.

“Hello, Nate,” she said.

“Hi, Margaret.”

That was all.

When the nurse called us back, Margaret undressed Benjamin. I undressed Abigail. The way Ellen had shown me. Left arm last.

The pediatrician weighed them both. Measured them. Listened to their hearts. Checked Abigail’s lungs very carefully.

“Clear as a bell,” she said. “No sign of any lasting trouble from the NICU. She’s perfect.”

Margaret closed her eyes and let out a breath she’d clearly been holding for six months.

I didn’t touch her. I didn’t hug her. I didn’t try to make that moment about us.

I just said, “That’s wonderful.”

And Margaret looked at me. For a long second.

Like she’d noticed I didn’t try.
