It was Wednesday, October 1st, a little after seven in the morning. I was still in my robe, sitting at Leif’s desk, with my coffee from under the sink.
The first two search results were a county parcel map and an old real estate photo.
The third was a rental listing.
I clicked on it. I read every word twice, the way I used to read a lease a client brought me in a paper grocery bag.
“Bright 2BR/2BA condo, Yuba City. Unfurnished. Owner relocating. $1,875/month. 12-month lease. Available September 15. Contact Darcy.”
There was a phone number.
It was my daughter-in-law’s cell. I’d had it in my phone for seven years.
There were nine photos. The kitchen. Two bathrooms. A small balcony with a dead geranium in a clay pot.
And in the photo of the empty living room, you could see pale squares in the beige carpet where furniture had stood for years.
And three small round dents in a triangle.
The way a grand piano’s legs leave them.
There was no mention of mold. Not one word. The condo was “move-in ready.” “Freshly painted.” “Spotless.”
At the very top of the page was a small gray banner.
RENTED.
Then I looked at the date it was posted.
Thursday, August 28th.
I sat back slowly in Leif’s chair.
I sailed on September 13th. Sixteen days before I left, my daughter-in-law had already put her mother’s home up for rent.
Owner relocating.
They knew exactly where the owner was relocating to.
They knew exactly which week I’d be gone.
It was never an emergency.
It was a plan. With dates.
Yuba City is about fifty minutes south of Chico.
I had a full tank of gas.
