At 6:04 on Wednesday evening, October 8th, my phone rang.
It was Darcy. She was already yelling when I picked up.
“You tricked us! You absolutely tricked us!”
I could hear Grady in the background, saying her name, trying to get her to slow down.
“I went to a lawyer today,” she said. “In Oroville. A real tenant lawyer. Odile Bertrand. I paid her two hundred dollars to read your stupid agreement, and she read the first page, and she just looked at me.”
“What did she say?”
“She said it’s a lodger thing. Some code. Nineteen forty-six point something.”
Darcy’s voice cracked.
“She said after the notice runs out, you can have Mom removed. Removed, Hillary. Like a raccoon.”
“Nineteen forty-six point five,” I said. “Of the Civil Code.”
There was a silence on the line.
Then Grady came on. Quieter. Which was worse.
“You tricked us, Mom.”
“No, Grady. I gave you exactly what you asked for. In writing.”
“You knew we wouldn’t read it.”
“I knew Darcy wanted paper. I told you the terms out loud, at my table. Week to week. No locks. One person. You all agreed. Keegan said, ‘She rents, it’s rent.'”
Darcy grabbed the phone back.
“We’ll see about that. We’ll see who’s still in that house on the 16th.”
She hung up.
I put the phone down on the counter and looked across the hall at the piano, standing in the window where my husband’s chair belonged. The metronome sat on top of it. Still, for once.
Darcy had finally read the word on page one.
I think it’s time you heard what it actually said.
