At 8:55 the next morning, Dedra was standing on my porch in her gardening clogs, holding a pen.
At nine o’clock on Saturday, October 4th, I knocked on the door of my own guest room.
There was no lock on it. There had never been one.
Norine opened it in her bathrobe, with her reading glasses pushed up into her hair.
“Norine, this is for you,” I said. “Please read it.”
I handed her the notice. Dedra stood in the hall behind me, where she could see the paper go from my hand into Norine’s.
I looked at my watch and said the time out loud.
“Nine-oh-one.”
The notice was short. It said that the hiring of the room under our agreement of September 26th would end at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, October 11th, 2025. And that after that time, she had no right to remain in my home.
Norine read it twice. Her mouth got very small.
“You can’t do this.”
“Read it again tonight,” I said. “Take your time.”
Dedra signed a proof of service at my kitchen table, in her careful schoolteacher handwriting.
At 10:15, I mailed the second copy from the main post office downtown. Certified. Restricted delivery. Return receipt requested.
Belt and suspenders. That’s how I was trained.
Forty minutes after I got home, Darcy and Keegan pulled into my driveway.
Darcy marched straight into my living room. She snatched the notice off the piano bench and read it out loud in a singsong voice, like a kid making fun of a teacher.
“Seven days.” She laughed. “Cute.”
“She has to file in court,” Keegan said, from the doorway. “Thirty-day notice minimum. Then it’s months.”
Darcy folded the notice into a neat little paper airplane. She sailed it across my living room.
It bumped against a piano leg and dropped onto my carpet.
“Recital’s still on, Hillary,” she said. “You’re invited.”
They thought the clock that mattered said October 16th.
Mine said the 11th.
