The bag was the size of my palm. It was packed so tight with fine white powder that it felt like a little sandbag in my hand.
There was a label on the front, in tiny, careful handwriting.
E-14.
I stood very still in the middle of my guest room, holding the mattress up on my shoulder with one hand and the bag in the other, and I listened to my own heart pound.
Under the mattress, lined up in a perfect row like soldiers, there were eleven more just like it.
R-07. B-22. S-03. W-19.
All white. All packed tight. All labeled in the same neat, slanted handwriting I’d seen on a hundred sticky notes on my refrigerator for the last six months.
“Wash the colander before the pasta, dear.”
“Harold’s pills are on the top shelf.”
“Don’t forget, Thomas likes the blue towels.”
My mother-in-law’s handwriting.
“No,” I whispered to the empty room. “No, no, no.”
Sweet Eleanor. Church-on-Sunday Eleanor. Eleanor, who brought me peppermint tea when I had a migraine and color-coded my spice rack without asking and once apologized to me for using too much dish soap.
Impossible.
But my hands were already moving. I let the mattress drop. I got down on my knees on the hardwood floor and swept my arm under the bed frame, way back into the dark, where the dust bunnies live.
My fingers hit something hard.
A suitcase. A rolling carry-on, shoved all the way against the wall.
I dragged it out. It was zipped tight. And it was heavy. Much heavier than a suitcase that size had any business being.
I unzipped it.
And my stomach turned completely over.
