My In-Laws Lived With Us for Six Months After They Moved Out, I Lifted the Guest-Room Mattress and Found Something Hidden Beneath It

Thomas caught my elbow as his parents walked past us.

“Claire. Baby. Breathe. Whatever it is, we’ll figure it out.”

“Figure it out?” My voice was climbing. I couldn’t stop it. “Thomas. There are illegal substances in our house!”

Eleanor reached the doorway of the guest room.

She stopped.

I watched the Tupperware container sag in her grip.

She took it all in. The propped-up mattress. The open suitcase. The little bags fanned out across the floor. The notebook lying open. The map.

Her face changed.

Confusion first.

Then a slow, dawning horror.

And then a bright pink flush that started at her collar and climbed all the way up to her hairline.

She walked into the room, very slowly, and sat down heavily on the edge of the bare mattress.

“Oh,” she said.

That was it. Just “oh.”

I want you to understand how that felt. I had been standing in that room for nearly an hour, absolutely certain my sweet, church-going mother-in-law was running some kind of drug operation out of my guest room. And her entire reaction to being caught was the same thing she’d say if she found out the grocery store was out of skim milk.

“Oh?” I said. “Eleanor. Oh?”

She pressed her fingertips to her lips.

“Claire, honey. Did you open any of them?”

“No!”

“Oh, thank God.” She let out her breath so hard it came out shaky.

And then, to my absolute bewilderment, she laughed.

A short, embarrassed little laugh.

Then her eyes filled with tears. And she laughed again.
