My In-Laws Lived With Us for Six Months After They Moved Out, I Lifted the Guest-Room Mattress and Found Something Hidden Beneath It

New ceilings. New floors. New kitchen. New furnace. A brand-new electrical panel the building inspector signed off on with a little flourish. The final insurance check cleared on Thursday. Bev the public adjuster sent us a bottle of champagne.

Thomas and I helped them load up Eleanor’s silver Buick. Harold’s toolbox. Their winter coats. Eleanor’s sewing basket. Two big suitcases and a carry-on, which Eleanor insisted on wheeling out to the car herself.

“I’ve got it, dear. It’s just my odds and ends.”

We hugged them in the driveway. Eleanor held my face in both of her soft, cool hands and said, “Thank you, Claire. I mean it. You’ve been a saint.”

“You’ve been easy,” I lied. Mostly lied. A little.

They drove away. We stood on the front porch and waved until the Buick turned the corner.

Then we walked back inside, closed the front door, and looked at each other.

And we both let out the biggest sigh of relief you’ve ever heard in your life.

“We did it,” Thomas said.

“We did it,” I said.

“They’re gone.”

“They’re gone!”

He picked me up and spun me around in the front hallway like we were teenagers who’d survived a chaperoned dance. We ordered Thai food. We ate it on the couch in our pajamas with our feet on the coffee table. We watched two movies in a row with the volume as loud as we wanted.

For the first time in six months, our house was ours again.

The next morning, Saturday, I got up early. I had a plan.

The guest room was going back to being my home office. For six months, I’d been doing people’s quarterly taxes on a TV tray in our bedroom. I’d already ordered a new desk. I couldn’t wait.

I opened the guest room door.
