My In-Laws Lived With Us for Six Months After They Moved Out, I Lifted the Guest-Room Mattress and Found Something Hidden Beneath It

So now, every Saturday, at the farmers’ market at High Rock Park, right where that little penciled X was on her map, there’s a small folding table with a hand-painted sign Harold made in his garage.

ELLIE’S HERITAGE LOAVES. OLD GRAINS. OLD STARTER. MADE WITH LOVE.

Einkorn. Rye. Red fife from J.J. Hollis’s mill outside Greenwich. She drove out there the week after the bags, and she finally brought him his thank-you card. He’s ninety now. He comes to the market every few weeks to buy a loaf made from his own wheat and tell her how she should have baked it longer.

She sells out by ten-thirty. Every week.

Harold stands next to her and tells every single customer that his wife is a genius. Loudly. Because he’s deaf in one ear.

Thomas and I still go every Saturday. We still buy peaches. And I still bring Margot a loaf every Sunday night, because she still hasn’t forgiven me for the charge nurse.

Sometimes I think about that morning. About standing in that room with my heart pounding, absolutely certain I’d found the worst possible thing behind a closed door.

My mother taught me that closed doors can hide anything.

She was right. They can.

But Eleanor taught me something she never meant to. Sometimes what people hide behind a closed door isn’t something terrible. Sometimes it’s the thing they love most. And they’re just scared somebody will laugh at it.

I keep the guest room door open now. Always.

And on the kitchen windowsill, every morning, there’s a small mason jar with a strip of masking tape on the front.

R-07. For Claire. Feed me.

I do. Every day.

And sometimes, when nobody’s around, I hum.
