“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Emily looked at him.
He’d said those words a thousand times. In board meetings. To executives he’d yelled at. To investors after a bad quarter. Whenever an apology could repair a relationship he still needed.
But this time, he had nothing to gain.
“I am so sorry, Emily. I was cruel. I was selfish. I was a coward. And I made you believe that the years we spent together, building everything from nothing, meant nothing to me.”
His voice cracked.
“You deserved a husband who stood beside you. Noah deserved a father who was in the room the first time he opened his eyes. And I gave neither of you what you deserved.”
Emily looked down at her hands. They were rough. Chapped. A small burn scar on the back of one wrist.
“I can’t forgive you just because you’re sorry, Daniel.”
“I know.”
“And money won’t change what happened. Paying for a surgery doesn’t give me back fourteen years.”
“I know that too.”
She studied his face for a long moment.
“Then what exactly do you want from us?”
Daniel looked over at Noah, sleeping peacefully in the hospital bed. His dark hair spread across the white pillow. His thin hands folded on the blanket.
“I want the chance to become somebody my son can trust,” he said.
He paused.
“And if you’ll ever let me, I want to spend the rest of my life proving I can be better than the man who stood in that hallway and sent you away.”
Emily didn’t answer.
She picked up the grilled cheese sandwich. She took one small bite. Then another.
And for the first time in his life, Daniel Whitmore understood that forgiveness wasn’t something he could negotiate.
It was something he was going to have to earn.
Every day. For as long as it took.
