The Millionaire Hadn’t Seen His Ex-Wife in 9 Years Then a Mysterious Letter Led Him to a Broken-Down House in Kentucky

“She signed the divorce papers,” Daniel said slowly. “Emily signed. I remember the lawyers saying so. Uncontested. She didn’t ask for anything.”

“She didn’t know there was anything to ask for,” Richard said. “Look at page six.”

Daniel turned to page six. A copy of the settlement agreement Emily had signed. Under the line for property settlement, someone had typed: To be disbursed from escrow upon entry of final decree.

She’d been promised money. It was in writing. It had never come.

“She must have thought…” Daniel stopped. “She must have thought I backed out. She must have thought I meant it. Don’t ever come back expecting anything from me.”

Richard nodded slowly.

“But that’s not the worst part, Daniel. Keep going. The last page.”

Daniel turned to the last page in the folder.

It was a letter on the letterhead of a private investigation firm in Nashville. Addressed to Michael Whitmore. Dated four months after Emily left the house in Greenwich.

Subject has been located in Letcher County, Kentucky. Residing with a cousin. Subject is employed part-time at a pharmacy. Subject appears to be approximately six months pregnant. Please advise how you would like us to proceed.

Daniel’s hands went ice cold.

“Michael knew,” he said.

Richard nodded.

“He knew Emily was carrying your child. He knew exactly where she was living. And he knew you’d never once tried to contact her.”

“Why?” Daniel’s voice came out as a rasp. “Why wouldn’t he tell me?”

Richard looked down at his hands. He looked deeply ashamed.

“Because he believed your marriage was weakening your hold on the company. You were talking about slowing down. Spending weekends in Vermont. Having kids. The board was nervous. And Michael had plans. He wanted you focused on the business, every hour of every day. He wanted to be next in line. And he knew that if Emily came back, with a baby, everything would change.”

Daniel slowly closed the folder.

His brother hadn’t caused the cruelty that drove Emily out of that house. That was Daniel’s. All of it. Every word in that hallway was his.

But Michael had seen the consequences. And he’d deliberately buried the truth.

He’d let a child grow up without a father because he thought it was better for the company.

He’d let that child’s mother go without a single dollar of her own settlement while she paid for medical bills on a pharmacy clerk’s wages.

Daniel stood up.

“Thank you for telling me, Richard.”

Richard looked up at him from the couch.

“What are you going to do?”

Daniel’s face was perfectly calm.

“I’m going to make sure the truth comes out,” he said.
