The Millionaire Hadn’t Seen His Ex-Wife in 9 Years Then a Mysterious Letter Led Him to a Broken-Down House in Kentucky

When he told her, they were sitting in the hospital cafeteria in Cincinnati.

He slid a single sheet of paper across the table. The forensic accountant’s summary.

Emily read it. Then she read it again.

Then she put the paper down and stared at him.

“There was a settlement,” she said. “There really was.”

“Two point four million dollars. Sitting in a lawyer’s escrow account with your name on it while you worked at a pharmacy counter. Michael took it.”

“I called them,” Emily whispered. “The law firm. Four times, that first year. When Noah was born. When the hospital bills started coming. They kept telling me the funds were ‘pending.’ Then they stopped calling me back. I thought…”

“You thought I’d changed my mind.”

She nodded. Her eyes were full.

“I thought you’d meant it. Don’t ever come back expecting anything.”

“I’m so sorry, Emily.”

She looked at the number at the bottom of the page again. Fourteen years of child support. Her share of the settlement, with interest and investment returns. Enough to never worry about a pink envelope again for the rest of her life.

She folded the paper in half and set it down.

“It doesn’t give me back the years, Daniel.”

“I know.”

“But it means Noah gets to go to college if he wants. It means I can stop being afraid of the mailbox.”

“Yes.”

She was quiet for a while. Then she said something that surprised him.

“I’m going to use some of it to pay back my cousin Lorraine. She let us live in her back bedroom for two years when Noah was a baby. She never asked for a dime.”

Daniel smiled.

“That sounds exactly like you.”
