The private jet landed at a little regional airport in Hazard. Marcus had driven the SUV down from New York overnight to meet him there. Daniel had insisted. He didn’t want to show up in a rental car with an Avis sticker on the bumper.
He told himself he didn’t know why that mattered.
The drive took another hour. Up and down mountain roads that wound like ribbons through hollows full of fog. Past boarded-up coal company stores. Past little churches with hand-painted signs. Past trailers with blue tarps on their roofs.
“You sure this is the right address, sir?” Marcus asked. He’d been driving for Daniel for nineteen years. He was the only employee at Whitmore Global who still remembered Emily.
“It’s the address she gave.”
“Mrs. Whitmore always did like the quiet,” Marcus said softly. “Remember how she used to sit out in the garden at the Greenwich house? For hours. Just reading.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He remembered.
He remembered everything about her. He’d spent fourteen years trying very hard not to.
The GPS lost signal two miles from the house. Marcus found it anyway, by counting mailboxes. The last one at the end of the gravel road was dented and leaning, with WHITMORE stenciled on the side in white paint.
She’d kept his name.
Daniel sat in the back of the SUV and stared at that mailbox for a long time.
The house behind it was small. Four rooms, maybe. White siding gone gray with age. A front porch with one step missing. A plastic ramp, the kind they sell at medical supply stores, leading up to the front door.
A ramp.
“Sir?” said Marcus. “You want me to come with you?”
“No. Wait here.”
Daniel got out into the rain. He walked up the ramp. He raised his hand to knock.
The door opened before he could.
And there she was.
Emily.
