“No way,” Jason said. “No. Way.”
“Grant?” Sarah whispered.
Eliza made a soft, broken little sound.
Caleb just stared.
Grant stood in the doorway of the gym in a dark blue uniform that fit him perfectly. His hair was cut short. Shorter than I’d seen it since he was in first grade. His shoes were shined so bright they reflected the gym lights. There was a name tag over his right pocket.
HENDERSON.
He lifted both of his hands up in front of him. Like a man walking into a storm.
“Okay,” he said. “Before anybody murders me. Happy birthday, Mom.”
My mouth finally started working again.
“What,” I said, “are you wearing?”
He swallowed hard.
“A uniform.”
“You’re a cop,” Mark said. He said it like he was saying you’re a giraffe.
“Yeah,” Grant said. “I am. Since three o’clock this afternoon.”
And Sarah exploded.
“Are you out of your mind?” she shouted. Her voice bounced off the gym walls. “Are you completely out of your mind, Grant? She thought you were dead! She thought you were dead! You sent a cop to her house at nine-thirty at night with a note that said ‘don’t ask questions’? Do you know what that looks like to a mother? Do you know how many times I’ve watched a police officer walk into the waiting room at Parkview to tell somebody’s mother…”
She stopped. Her voice broke.
Grant flinched like she’d hit him.
Then his eyes went to mine.
“Mom. I’m so sorry. I didn’t think. I just… I wanted to surprise you. I wanted to walk in here in my uniform and see your face. I thought the note would be funny. Like a movie. A quick little scare, and then the surprise, and everybody laughs.”
“You didn’t think,” I repeated.
It came out like a slap.
He nodded. Shame was all over his face.
“I didn’t know you were sitting at home. For hours. I thought the others would tell you something. I thought…”
“I was sitting at the table, Grant.”
That landed in the middle of that gym like a dropped weight.
Mark looked down at the floor. Eliza started crying quietly.
