I stood up.
All six of them looked at me.
I looked down the long table at them. Mark. Jason. Caleb. Grant. Sarah. Eliza. All grown. All here. All six chairs full.
“Listen to me,” I said.
They got quiet. All of them. The way they used to when I said “listen to me” in the kitchen on Wells Street and they knew I meant it.
“Your father walked out of my house twenty-three years ago and never came back. He wanted a loud house and a full table. And then the first time it got hard, he decided he didn’t.”
Nobody moved.
“I didn’t raise six children by myself so you could all learn to disappear on me.”
Mark looked down at his plate.
“No more disappearing,” I said. “Not on birthdays. Not on holidays. Not on random Tuesdays. Not when it’s convenient and not when it’s hard. You call. You answer. You show up. Even when it’s a surprise. Even when you’re running late. Even when you’re scared I’m going to be disappointed in you.”
I looked right at Grant.
“Especially then.”
One by one, they nodded.
“Deal,” Mark said.
“Deal,” said Sarah.
“Deal,” Eliza whispered.
“Deal,” Caleb said.
Jason sat up straight in his folding chair. For once in his life, he wasn’t joking.
“Deal,” he said.
And Grant reached over and covered my hand with his big, rough one.
“Deal,” he said softly. “And I’ll prove it, Mom.”
I squeezed his fingers.
“I know you will.”
