The next Friday, I sat in the front row of the auditorium at the Grand Wayne Center.
All six of my children’s chairs were full. Five in the second row behind me, plus Mark’s wife and two kids. Jason’s girlfriend. Caleb’s husband. Sarah came straight from a twelve-hour shift in her scrubs. Eliza brought a sign she made with her second graders that said GO OFFICER GRANT in glitter glue.
Grant was on the stage with thirty-one other new officers, in their dress uniforms, with white gloves.
When they called his name, Officer Grant Henderson, I walked up those steps on legs that were shaking almost as badly as they had on my front porch.
A sergeant handed me the badge. I pinned it on my son’s chest. My fingers fumbled with the clasp, and Grant put his gloved hand over mine and helped me.
“Hi, Mom,” he whispered.
“Hi, baby.”
“You came.”
“I said I would.”
The whole auditorium was clapping. Somewhere behind me, I heard Jason whistle with two fingers, so loud the mayor jumped.
I don’t know where Ray Henderson is tonight. Somewhere in Manila, I suppose. Owing me a hundred and sixty thousand dollars and twenty-three years.
He wanted a loud house and a table that was never empty.
He walked away from it.
I stayed.
And last week, when I got home from the graduation, I took the leftover food out of my refrigerator. The pot roast. The scalloped potatoes. The green bean casserole. The rolls. All of it, still waiting since my birthday.
I set the table again. Grandma’s china. Cloth napkins.
Seven places.
At five o’clock, I peeked through the blinds.
And all six of them were already pulling into the driveway.
Not one of them was late.
