“HAPPY…”
It was Jason. He started shouting it, with his arms up in the air. And then he saw my face, and he froze with his arms still up.
Mark’s face went guilty so fast it made my stomach twist.
Sarah’s face went sharp with alarm.
Eliza put both hands over her mouth.
Caleb went white.
There was a giant banner hanging across the basketball hoop at the far end of the gym. Gold letters on purple paper.
HAPPY 60TH, MOM!
Balloons. Dozens of them. Purple and gold and white, tied to the bleachers and the chairs and floating up against the ceiling. Streamers. Three long tables covered in white paper tablecloths, loaded with food in aluminum pans. And a cake on its own little table. A big, beautiful three-layer cake from Rachel’s Bakery, with purple flowers on top. It must have cost a fortune.
And five of my six children standing in the middle of that gym. Staring at me. Like they were waiting for a punchline that never came.
I stood very still in the doorway.
When my voice finally came out, it was small. And sharp.
“So you were all here.”
Mark stepped forward fast.
“Mom. Wait. Let us explain.”
“I waited four hours,” I said. “Four hours.”
Nobody moved.
“I cooked for two days. I set the table with Grandma’s china. I ironed napkins. I sat at that table by myself from five o’clock until nine-thirty, watching the candles burn down. Calling every single one of you.”
Jason’s arms finally came down.
“Mom, we weren’t ignoring you. We swear. We wanted to surprise you. That was the whole plan. Grant was supposed to pick you up at five and bring you here. He said he’d tell you there was a change of plans. We all turned our phones off so we wouldn’t accidentally ruin it.”
“Where is Grant?” I said.
Eliza’s eyes filled with tears.
“We thought he was with you, Mom.”
And then Sarah spun around, toward the police officer still standing behind me in the doorway.
“Why is there a cop with her?” Sarah snapped. “What happened? Where’s Grant?”
