I Waited Four Hours for My Six Children to Arrive for My 60th Birthday Then a Police Officer Came to My Door With a Note

I stared at the badge on his chest.

It caught the light from the gym ceiling. A silver shield. FORT WAYNE POLICE. A number stamped across the bottom.

Real. Solid. Heavy.

My anger didn’t disappear. It didn’t. I want to be honest about that. I’d spent four hours alone and twenty minutes in the back of a police car believing my son was dead, and that doesn’t just vanish.

But it cracked.

I reached out and touched the badge with two fingers. It was cold.

“You did this,” I said.

Grant’s bottom lip trembled.

“Yeah.”

I blinked hard.

“You scared me half to death.”

“I know,” he whispered. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Mom.”

And the tears came anyway.

Because my wild one had done something good. Because my hardest kid, the one I’d lain awake over for nineteen years, had gone and tried. Without anybody watching. Without anybody believing in him except me.

“I thought you were gone,” I said. And my voice broke right in half.

Grant’s face crumpled.

He stepped in and hugged me. Careful at first, like he was afraid I might push him away. Then tight. So tight. His badge pressed into my cheek. He smelled like starch and gun oil and the same drugstore shampoo he’s used since high school.

“I’m here, Mom,” he said into my hair. “I’m right here.”

Behind us, Sarah’s voice had gone soft.

“Mom. I’m sorry.”

“We all are,” Mark said. His voice cracked.

Jason cleared his throat. “Yeah. We really messed this up.”

Eliza came over and wrapped her arms around my side, the way she used to when she was little and there was a thunderstorm.

“We just wanted it to be perfect,” she whispered.

I wiped my cheeks with the sleeve of my cardigan.

“There’s no such thing as perfect, sweetheart,” I said. “There’s just showing up.”
