I Waited Four Hours for My Six Children to Arrive for My 60th Birthday Then a Police Officer Came to My Door With a Note

Later, when the balloons were starting to droop and the cake was mostly crumbs, Grant leaned in close to me.

“Mom. There’s one more thing.”

I braced myself. “If there’s another police officer outside…”

He laughed. “No. I promise. No more cops.”

He reached into his chest pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. Not a note this time. A program. Printed on heavy cream paper with the city seal on the front.

FORT WAYNE POLICE ACADEMY. CLASS 74. GRADUATION AND BADGE PINNING CEREMONY.

“Today was the swearing-in,” Grant said. “That’s when you get the badge and you’re officially a cop. But next Friday is the real graduation. In the auditorium at the Grand Wayne Center. All the families come. The mayor speaks. And at the end, they call each officer up on the stage, one at a time.”

He pointed to a line printed in the program.

Badge Pinning by Family Member.

“They take the badge off your chest,” Grant said. “And somebody from your family pins it back on. In front of everybody.”

He swallowed.

“I saved you a seat, Mom. Front row. I want it to be you who pins it on me.”

I stared at that program.

“Next Friday,” I repeated.

He nodded. Proud and nervous at exactly the same time.

“Will you come?”

I looked at him. My wild one. My hardest one. The boy who spray-painted the back of a Kroger. The man in a pressed blue uniform, sitting next to me in the gym where I used to watch him sulk on the end of the bench.

My son, trying.

“Yes,” I said. “I’ll be there.”

His shoulders sagged with relief. And he smiled. That big, crooked smile he’s had since he was four years old.
