I watched my husband hide a suitcase under our bed.
He didn’t know I could see him do it.
It was a Tuesday night in late September. I was sitting on the edge of our bed in Portland with my hands folded in my lap, the way I’d sat a thousand times in the two years since the accident. Waiting. Listening. Trying to figure out from footsteps alone what kind of mood Ashton was in.
That night, his footsteps were heavy.
He came into the bedroom without saying a word. I heard the closet door. I heard a zipper. I heard something heavy drag across the hardwood floor.
And then I saw it.
Not clearly. Nothing was clear yet. But I saw the dark shape of my husband crouch down beside the bed. I saw a big black rectangle in his hands. I saw him push it, slowly and carefully, into the shadows underneath the bed frame.
Then he turned his head and looked right at me.
I dropped my eyes to the floor. Fast. My heart was hammering so hard I was sure he could hear it.
“You okay?” he asked.
“I’m fine.”
He stood there for a second. I could feel him watching me. Checking.
Checking whether his blind wife had noticed anything.
“I’m going to take a shower,” he said.
I nodded.
He walked into the bathroom and shut the door. A second later, the water came on.
I sat perfectly still on the edge of our bed, staring at a blurry gray patch of carpet, and I thought one thing over and over.
What else has he done right in front of me because he thought I couldn’t see?
