I wiped my cheeks with the back of my hand.
“Ashton,” I said. “While you were trying to protect me from all these hard conversations, you were making me feel more alone than I’ve ever felt in my whole life. More alone than in the hospital. More alone than the first night home.”
He nodded slowly.
“I know,” he said. “I handled this badly. All of it. I know that.”
We sat there quietly for a moment. The clock ticked on the mantel.
Then Ashton’s eyes moved down to the papers in my lap. The letter to Rebecca. I’d picked it up again while he was talking. I was holding it in one hand. And my phone was in the other hand, still on the magnifier.
His whole expression changed.
I saw it happen. Blurry, but I saw it. The way his head tilted. The way he leaned forward.
“Wait a minute,” he said slowly.
I froze.
“Sutton,” he said. “How are you reading those?”
I couldn’t say anything.
For two weeks, I’d planned this moment. Candles. Chicken parmesan. “You need a haircut.”
It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. In the middle of the worst fight of our marriage. With divorce papers on the coffee table and a packed suitcase on the floor.
But it was happening. And I couldn’t hide it anymore. I didn’t want to hide anything anymore.
“How are you reading those?” he said again, softer.
I looked up at the blurry shape of my husband’s face.
“Because my eyesight is coming back,” I whispered.
He stared at me.
“What?”
