My Husband Thought I Was Still Blind Then I Saw What He Hid Beneath Our Bed and Found My Name on a Document I Never Signed

My eyesight kept improving at its own pace. Some weeks were better than others. Some mornings I’d wake up and the world would seem sharper. Some mornings it seemed blurry again, and I’d panic, and Ashton would hold my hand until it passed.

But little by little, I started seeing more details.

The freckles on Megan’s nose, when she came over for dinner and cried when I told her she needed to pluck her eyebrows.

The yellow leaves on the maple tree in our front yard.

The cracks in our kitchen ceiling that Ashton swore he was going to fix three years ago.

One evening in early November, I was looking for my winter boots in our bedroom closet. And there it was, up on the top shelf.

Ashton’s black suitcase. The one with the dent in the corner from Denver.

I pulled it down. It was empty. He’d unpacked every last shirt.

He was standing in the bedroom doorway. I hadn’t heard him come in.

He saw me looking at it.

“Want me to get rid of that thing?” he asked. “I’ll drop it at Goodwill tomorrow. I never want to see it again, honestly.”

I shook my head.

“No,” I said. “I have a better idea.”

“What?”

“Let’s use it.”

He frowned. “For what?”

I smiled at him.

“A vacation.”

He raised one eyebrow. I could see it now. Not perfectly. But I could see his eyebrow go up, the way it always used to.

“Where do you want to go?”

“Somewhere with a beautiful view,” I said. “I have two years of views to catch up on.”
